During the last 10 months I have taken a break from all social media and have not been diving that much or had much interaction with the dive community in general.?
During this downtime the jungle drums and bush telegraph seems to be have been busy making up wild rumours as usual. I am very happy to say that reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated and neither is there any truth in the theory that I am currently, or have ever been for that matter, in prison!
During this time I have been dealing with an ongoing issue with big implications for my future in diving and as clear answers have been difficult to come by I feel as if I have been in limbo for a while.
Family and close friends have been aware of my situation but as a fairly private person I do not really like discussing personal issues on public forums especially when I have felt like I had no clear answers for myself let alone to give other people.
Now is a good time to make an update on my current situation as I have come to a clear decision on my future in diving. Before I explain that further I have to give a little back story.
In the last year I have had Decompression Illness three times after normal, easy dives that did not have any diving violations, predisposing factors or clear reasons as to why I have been getting bent.
My general health is good and none of the tests I have had done over the last year have indicated any underlying medical issues.
Unfortunately it is now clear to me following the third DCS incident of a few days ago that I have to stop diving for good.
The risk of suffering permanent, possibly life changing, neurological damage has now become too great.
Probably I should have come to this conclusion sooner but it is very hard to walk away from both your job and your passion after 28+ years.
Decompression theory is still a very inexact science, I don’t know why I am getting bent on comparatively conservative dives and it seems neither do the hyperbaric doctors I have spoken with.
I guess it is most likely a combination of increasing age - hard to believe but I turned 55 a short while ago even though I know I look much, much younger - and underlying cumulative damage over many years of diving a lot!
Diving has been a great adventure and has taken me many places I would probably never have visited otherwise. I have had the opportunity to meet and make friends with fantastic people from all over the world through diving and I feel very lucky and privileged to have had the opportunity to make many amazing dives in incredibly beautiful places.
As both a student and a teacher of diving it has helped me to remain young at heart, open minded and excited to learn new things and I hope I have contributed in some small way to others enjoyment of a passion I have loved so much and have enjoyed sharing with others.
I will miss diving more than I can say and at this point I do not know exactly what the future has in store but in the words of John Lennon "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans."
Regards to all
